During their final year at the University of Chester BA Photography students are working on a sustained, year long personal project, which is the culmination of their studies.

As they move towards graduation, students have engaged with a wide range of contexts, which broadly reflect contemporary photography practice and debates. These range from experimental approaches to documentary photography rooted in personal experience, as well as those everyday encounters found in an interior and external environment, which gain a new found significance.

Many projects have a socially engaged dimension, which have emerged from situations, which are close to, or have impacted personally on the individuals making the work. Other students have taken a more directed editorial approach towards specific and wider industry contexts.

This year is different. In this final year showcase of work, which has been made in the midst of COVID-19, students have readily adapted their projects, at a pivotal point in their development, as they prepare to move into a world, which will be very different from the one contemplated at the beginning of this academic year.

The impact of the crisis for society and photographic practice is marked, as it is one dependent on social interaction and the freedom to explore the city and landscape without hindrance or prohibition. The final year cohort have had to take on this challenge, which demonstrates their resilience and ability to adapt in creative ways whilst facing one of the most testing times in recent history.
